Richie, the saluting boy on Omaha Beach, is 12-years-old. In 2013, his dad helped him start Project Vigil. It is dedicated to the memory of American soldiers killed in the D-Day invasion of World War II.

The Battle of Normandy lasted from June 1944 to August 1944. D-Day (also known as Operation Overload) happened on June 6, 1944 and was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history. For many years, the Allied casualties (killed, wounded, missing in action, and prisoners of war) figures for D-Day have been estimated at 10,000, including 2,500 dead.

Thanks to Richie, the saluting boy on Omaha Beach, for this stark reminder of the sacrifice made that day.
